Street Dogs, Mercados and Rebar... We're Back!

Saludos from Tulum, Mexico!

It's the scrappy dogs on the side of the road hunting for discarded food, the sound of reggaeton blasting from the store speakers and the multiple, consecutive houses that have rebar poking from the tops of their roofs that make us smile and realize we're here! Yes, we've made it to Lively, Lovable, Latin America!

A year after leaving Pisco, Peru, and the friends and community we became a part of, we're back for Round Two. In 2011 we both fell into roles at Pisco Sin Fronteras (which will affectionately be referred to here on out as PSF) and got more involved in a volunteering community than we ever dreamed of, without really understanding the implication or intensity this new life would bring and the profound effect it would have on our understanding of the world around us. This time around, our intentions are clear. Volunteer, and stick around long enough to see change. Sightseeing, while on our loose agenda, takes the backseat.

Due to a ridiculously cheap ticket to Cancun, we have two weeks to frolic around southern Mexico (the Yucatan, Oaxaca, Chiapas), then it's down to Guatemala to get right into it. We have spoken with As Green As It Gets (an organization that works with local coffee growers while developing sustainable construction and local micro businesses) about a few long-term positions and ideas they'd like each of us to consider, and we've got Operation Groundswell's Peru trips that we're leading beginning in May that will occupy our (northern hemisphere's) summer 2013. Overall, we have some busy months ahead of us!

We have decided to keep this a joint blog, written as much together as possible, but also with the freedom of providing individual thoughts and ideas when the feeling is right. We hope you follow along on our trip and donate whenever you want to get involved with what we're doing.

Gracias por leer y nos vemos pronto!
